I absolutely love watching this series and its characters evolve from book to book。 In Mission Manhattan, the gang is working to protect a teen environmental advocate from Russian bad guys。 They start in Venice then travel to Washington DC and New York City。 I appreciate how the characters become a little more human in each book。 They make mistakes and learn and grow together。 Their traits aren’t thrown in the check a box。 They’re integral to each character。 The book is diverse without being per I absolutely love watching this series and its characters evolve from book to book。 In Mission Manhattan, the gang is working to protect a teen environmental advocate from Russian bad guys。 They start in Venice then travel to Washington DC and New York City。 I appreciate how the characters become a little more human in each book。 They make mistakes and learn and grow together。 Their traits aren’t thrown in the check a box。 They’re integral to each character。 The book is diverse without being performative。 The slight stray from the typical formula was fun and I loved the dramatic irony with Mother’s situation and who the REAL bad guy is。 As usual, Ponti doesn’t estimate his middle grade readers。 The plot is complicated, well-researched, and engaging for all-ages。 I’m already looking forward to the next one and watching Clementine’s next move! This e-ARC was provided by NetGalley。 。。。more

Chrissy Casey,
Mission Manhattan is the latest in the City Spies adventures。 In this mission, the city spies are tasked with protecting Beatriz, a Brazilian environmentalist。 The mission starts in Venice, then jumps to Washington, DC and finally ends in NY city。 In this book we learn more about Rio's backstory and learn more about Cairo's loyalties。 These stories get better and better。 I highly recommend this installment of the City Spies!!!!! Christina,
The 5th installment in James Ponti's "City Spies" series is called "Mission Manhattan" but takes readers on a thrilling spy adventure that also unfolds in Venice and Washington D。C。 The young spies are tasked with protecting a young Brazilian environmental activist named Beatriz who has vaulted to global stardom because of her activism but also has apparently drawn danger。 The Brazilian connection leads tp us learning more of Rio's backstory, such as how he became a food connoisseur and a master The 5th installment in James Ponti's "City Spies" series is called "Mission Manhattan" but takes readers on a thrilling spy adventure that also unfolds in Venice and Washington D。C。 The young spies are tasked with protecting a young Brazilian environmental activist named Beatriz who has vaulted to global stardom because of her activism but also has apparently drawn danger。 The Brazilian connection leads tp us learning more of Rio's backstory, such as how he became a food connoisseur and a master at sleight-of-hand。 Mother's son, now known as Cairo, is a new member of the team but still maintains a secret connection to his mother Clementine, who may work for the evil syndicate Umbra, but also might be a double agent。 This story was my favorite in the series so far because of the settings。 I loved the beautiful descriptions of the canals of Venice as well as the action that unfolds in one my favorite NYC landmarks, the New York Public Library。 I also really liked the interaction the young spies had with C, the head of the Secret Intelligence Service。 Mission Manhattan comes with my highest recommendation, a fantastic fifth story about some extraordinary young people and their found family。 。。。more
Michelle Jarrett,
James Ponti does it again! Wonderful 5th installment to his City Spies series and a must for middle grade collections。 The sophistication with which Ponti writes is refreshing for the age range。 He knows today’s kids are smart and it shows。 Thanks to Netgalley for the eArc!
Tonja Drecker,
This is book five in the series, and when a series gets this far, I'm always afraid the tales will start getting repetitive。 While the best attributes from this series continue in this read, it's as exciting and unpredictable as the first four。The City Spies find themselves on a mission to protect a young and very popular climate activist, who is on her way to speak before the United Nations General Assembly。 But even during a protest appearance before her speech, a deadly threat lurks in the cr This is book five in the series, and when a series gets this far, I'm always afraid the tales will start getting repetitive。 While the best attributes from this series continue in this read, it's as exciting and unpredictable as the first four。The City Spies find themselves on a mission to protect a young and very popular climate activist, who is on her way to speak before the United Nations General Assembly。 But even during a protest appearance before her speech, a deadly threat lurks in the crowd。 Someone is determined to stop her, and the City Spies need to stop them。 Plus, the team has a new member, Rio, which might be a problem or a blessing。 Either way, the team is determined to do their duty no matter how sticky the situations get。There are reads, which flow extremely smoothly, and let the story perform its magic。 This is one of those。 The tale begins with the latest mission。。。and a bit of humor。 The personalities of each character immediately shine as they work seamlessly together in a quickly increasingly difficult mission。 And yet, that doesn't mean that each one doesn't have their own difficulties or flaws。 The author manages to maintain a great balance of action and emotional depth to make the characters interesting, their interactions fun, and the tension high。 It makes for an easy read, which flies by。While this book slides right in with the series, several aspects give it just enough of an original atmosphere to hold its own。 Centering the mission around a international climate activist was a surprising and fun twist。 It did have me thinking of Greta right away, but it took its own interesting turns to keep this only as a quick, first thought。 The security issues the group faces were interesting, as was the dynamic Rio brings as the new member of the group。 It doesn't seem like this will be the last book in the series, and it will be fun to see what this group goes up against next。 。。。more
Jenn,
Mission Manhattan is another fun, action-packed City Spies adventure! This time, the kids are on the hunt for some disruptors at an eco-event where a famous teen climate activist is speaking。 But their chase will eventually lead them to New York City。 Ponti has penned yet another compelling story to add to this fantastic series!I rarely read kidlit, but these books are an exception。 They're fun and crazy, without being TOO ridiculous for the subject matter。 They're one of my frequent recommendat Mission Manhattan is another fun, action-packed City Spies adventure! Another fabulous City Spies adventure! This one starts in Venice and moves to both Washington DC and New York City。 It combines several simultaneous missions and we see each of the City Spies (including Cairo) play to their strengths。 I'm really enjoying watch the Spies mature into a cohesive unit and trust themselves and each other more。 There are some great messages about climate change and the environment here too。 I'm looking forward to the next one! E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusThe spies are off to Venice, Italy, to a climate convention for young people。 Since their cover is being student fellows at the Foundation for Atmospheric Research and Monitoring, it makes perfect sense, but some of them don bee costumes as cover anyway。 Rio is assigned to young climate activist Beatriz, who is also Brazilian, and manages to locate a bomb on the water taxi she is taking to go talk to a group of adults。 This puts him under suspicion by the police, E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusThe spies are off to Venice, Italy, to a climate convention for young people。 Since their cover is being student fellows at the Foundation for Atmospheric Research and Monitoring, it makes perfect sense, but some of them don bee costumes as cover anyway。 Rio is assigned to young climate activist Beatriz, who is also Brazilian, and manages to locate a bomb on the water taxi she is taking to go talk to a group of adults。 This puts him under suspicion by the police, but endears him to Beatriz。 Cairo, meanwhile, is still sorting through his feelings about his mother, Clementine, who is still at odds with his father。 When Beatriz has to speak in Washington D。C。, the spies notice that there is a pattern of unsettling behavior involving empty buildings, and worry that terrorists want to kidnap Beatriz and hold her in one of the abandoned locations。 Does this have something to do with someone who wants to take Beatriz's place as an environmental leader? I don't want to spoil all of the twists and turns in this, so pick up a copy and find out! Since this ends with Clementine spying on all of the children at The Farm, it seems HIGHLY likely there will be at least one more sequel。 Strengths: I love that this included a big environmental component, just like Gibbs' Fun Jungle books。 It's one thing to see student protests around the world; it's quite another to see the nitty gritty of travel and security! The scenes in Venice with masked protestors wheeling a suspicious looking globe into the area was very interesting, and a little bit funny, even though it was a serious situation。 The chidlren continue to play well off each other's strengths, and the addition of Cairo, who is struggling to understand what is going on with his mother, is a good one。 Another strong addition to a popular series。 Weaknesses: Oddly, I wanted to spend more time at the Farm。 Apparently, I was just not in spy mode when I read this。 Totally a "me" problem, as most of my readers are all about a LOT of action, and not just tea by the fire! What I really think: Five books does make such a nice series, so I wouldn't have been disappointed if this had been wrapped up and we saw something new and exciting from Mr。 Ponti, but I also understand the desire to keep a good thing going。 These books circulate well, so I will continue to buy them for my school library。 。。。more
